All about Maersk Oil:
Maersk Oil was a Danish oil and gas company under the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. At its peak, it handled up to 550,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day. They pulled oil and gas from all over—Denmark, the UK, Qatar, Kazakhstan, the US Gulf of Mexico, Algeria, and Brazil. For exploration, Maersk Oil kept busy in Angola, Norway, Greenland, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and those same producing countries.
The story goes back to 1962, when the Maersk Group landed a concession to explore and produce oil and gas in the Danish part of the North Sea. By 1986, Maersk Oil took over running the Dansk Undergrunds Consortium’s fields in that same stretch of sea.
Fast-forward to August 31, 2015. The UK Oil and Gas Authority gave the green light to a consortium led by Maersk Oil to start developing the Culzean field, about 150 miles southeast of Aberdeen in the North Sea. This field is no joke—it’s high pressure, high temperature, and holds around 300 million barrels of oil equivalent. Once it hits full stride, sometime in 2020 or 2021, it’s set to supply enough gas to cover about 5% of the UK’s needs. Maersk Oil, along with JX Nippon and BP (Britoil), planned to pour around £3 billion (roughly $4.5 billion) into making that happen.
